Okogie started playing basketball at a young age and developed into a top high school prospect. After originally committing to play for Saint John’s University, he later decided to attend Georgia Tech instead.

Okogie had a successful freshman season with the Yellow Jackets, averaging 16.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He was selected as a First Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer and earned Third Team All-America honors from the Associated Press. Following the season, Okogie entered the NBA Draft and was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 20th overall pick.
