Mr. Krabs utters the phrase “Spongeboy Me Bob!” in the first season Spongebob Squarepants episode “Squeaky Boots,” which aired September 4th, 1999. Mr. Krabs is tormented with guilt after stealing Spongebob’s treasured boots. When Spongebob approaches him, he attempts to act normal but botches Spongebob’s name.

On December 6th, 2018, a deleted Reddit user posted a photo of Mr. Krabs uttering the words “before discussing war with /r/BikiniBottomTwitter,” gaining over 280 points. On February 26th, 2019,Redditor MagikMagic updated /r/okaybuddyretard and gained almost 270 points.

The meme’s template was solidified several months later, owing to Instagram user monocularadventures. On March 27th, 2019, the individual uploaded a deep-fried picture of Mr. Krabs uttering the word “bun.” They also gave a meaning to the image’s text. The clip has been seen over 11,000 times. Over the following few days, the user created a number of similar posts. Their most popular one, posted April 11th, had over 86000 views.

From monocularadventures, the template spread to Reddit’s shitposting communities, and spawned a subreddit, that gained over 4,200 members. There, top posts include a post by AsscrackOreos that gained over 670 points (shown below, left) and a Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure reference posted by BigBoyMoveulus that gained over 540 points.
